For commissioned notaries in New York State, the renewal process has changed. No longer can a notary submit his or her renewal through the County Clerk’s office. This process was quite simple in the past.

A notary would simply fill out their renewal application, go to another notary and take their oath of office, then submit their application along with the $60.00 fee. Then, several weeks later, the new license would arrive in the mail.

Although you can still renew 90 days before your expiration date, the renewal process is completely different.

Notary Renewal is now Online

New York is now requiring that all notary license renewals be done online. This became effective in June of 2023. In order to renew your commission, you must first register for an online account. To do this, you need to go to the New York Business Express website.

After you have completed our Business Express Registration, you’ll need to find the licensing division and then search for your notary record. Once you locate your record, you will need to go to your dashboard to begin the renewal process.  Here, you can also update any changes to the information you have on file. This includes: A name change, address change, phone number, etc.

As we all know, dealing with the State can be cumbersome and frustrating. So, to get to the Notary Renewal section, here is a link. Renew or Update Notary Public License.

When the State has completed your renewal, they will email you your new commission as a PDF. You can simply print it, and you will be all set for the next 4 years.

Once you have renewed your commission, future renewals should be much easier. This is because you will become familiar with navigating the website’s interface.

Avoid Common Mistakes

  • Waiting until the last minute to renew. Although you can renew your commission after its expiration date, it is not recommended.
  • Be certain your stamp is not expired. Its date needs to correspond with your new commission expiration date.
  • As mentioned above, update any personal information that may have changed since your previous commission was issued.
  • Not ordering updated supplies (journal, embosser, etc.)
